ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“The Manneporte near Étretat” is an oil painting by Claude Monet, a French artist. The painting depicts the Manneporte, a naturally formed arch, and a freestanding needle-like rock that attracted tourists and artists alike to the town of Étretat in Normandy, France. The painting is an oil on canvas and was created in 1886. Monet painted the Manneporte six times from this angle: twice during each of three visits to the Normandy coast in 1883, 1885, and 1886. The painting is part of the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Claude Monet, a pioneering figure in the Impressionist movement, was a French painter born in 1840. Known for his revolutionary approach to art, Monet's work often centered around the exploration of light, color, and the transient qualities of nature. His iconic paintings, such as "Water Lilies" and "Impression, Sunrise," not only depicted landscapes and scenes but also captured the shifting effects of light and atmosphere on these subjects. Monet's dedication to capturing the nuances of natural light and his loose brushwork revolutionized the art world, inspiring a new way of perceiving and portraying the world around us.
