About the Artist
George Stubbs ARA (1724-1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs was a pioneer of the scientific study of animal anatomy, and his work had a profound influence on other artists and scientists. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. He is now considered to be one of the most important animal painters of all time.
