ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“Rich Port (a travel picture, 1938)” is an opaque watercolor painting by Paul Klee and is part of the Kunstmuseum Basel Museum’s collection. The painting is classified as an abstract work. The painting features a series of geometric shapes in shades of blue, green, and yellow, with a few red accents. The shapes are arranged in a way that suggests a landscape, with a central form that resembles a harbor or port. The painting is a fine example of Klee’s interest in the relationship between music and visual art, as he was a composer and music theorist in addition to being a painter,

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Paul Klee (1879-1940) was a Swiss-born German artist. He was one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Klee’s highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He was also a composer and music theorist. Klee’s works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes childlike perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality. He taught at the Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture in Germany, where he met his colleague, Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky. Klee’s works include more than 10,000 paintings, drawings, and etchings.
