ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This exquisite Neo-Impressionist portrait by Paul Signac depicts the critic and art dealer Félix Fénéon, a close friend and supporter of the artist. The portrait captures Fénéon's sharp intellect and discerning eye through his piercing gaze and contemplative pose. Signac's use of vibrant colors and delicate brushwork creates a sense of intimacy and psychological depth, while the swirling background echoes Fénéon's role in shaping the avant-garde art scene of the late 19th century. The painting is currently in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Paul Signac (1863-1935) was a French painter who played a pivotal role in the development of Neo-Impressionism, a post-Impressionist movement that emerged in the late 19th century. He is best known for his pointillist paintings, which are characterized by the use of small dots of pure color to create a mosaic-like effect. In 1884, he met Georges Seurat, who was developing a new technique called pointillism. Together, Signac and Seurat developed the theory and practice of pointillism. Signac was a highly respected artist during his lifetime and produced a wide variety of works, including landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and still lifes.
