About the Artist

Takahashi Shōtei (1871-1945) was a prominent figure in the shin-hanga ("new prints") art movement of the 20th century. Born Hiroaki Takahashi in Tokyo, Japan, he embarked on his artistic journey at a young age, apprenticed to his uncle Matsumoto Fuko, a renowned ukiyo-e painter. Under Fuko's guidance, Shotei developed a deep appreciation for traditional Japanese art and meticulously honed his skills in brushwork, composition, and color theory. Shotei's legacy lies in his contributions to the revival and revitalization of ukiyo-e, transforming it into a dynamic and relevant art form for the 20th century.
