John Frederick Herring

John Frederick Herring Sr. (1795-1865) was a painter, sign maker, and coachman in Victorian England. He is known for his paintings of horses and fox hunting scenes, including the 1839 painting “Foxhunting: Clearing a Ditch”. Herring Sr. amended his signature to “SR” in 1836, with the growing fame of his teenage son John Frederick Herring Jr., who also became a painter. Herring Sr. painted the 1848 “Pharoah’s Chariot Horses”. He spent the last 12 years of his life at Meopham Park near Tonbridge, where he lived as a country squire.
