ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This artwork is an original 1888 edition of a Chinese pattern from “L’ornement Polychrome” by Albert Racine. The dominant figure is a blue dragon, depicted mid-flight amidst greenish waves and white clouds, with a prominent red sun near its head. The lower section features symmetrical patterns of flowers and waves in vibrant colors like red, yellow, green, and blue. A Greek key pattern frames the central image, giving it an enclosed look.

 

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Albert Racinet (1825-1893) was a French illustrator, artist, and costume historian known for his influential work on the history of costume and ornamentation. Racinet's most notable contribution is his multi-volume publication titled "Le Costume Historique" (The Historical Costume), which contains meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated depictions of clothing, accessories, and decorative styles from various civilizations and historical periods.
