Odilon Redon (1840-1916) was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, and pastellist who is considered one of the most important figures in the development of modern art. He was known for his evocative and dreamlike paintings, which often explored themes of the unconscious, the supernatural, and the human psyche.
In the 1880s, Redon began to produce a series of charcoal drawings and lithographs that he called his "Noirs" which were inspired by his dreams and nightmares and were a critical and commercial success which helped to establish Redon as a leading figure in the Symbolist movement.
