ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“Blue Night” is a painting by Paul Klee, created in 1937. The painting is classified as an abstract work and is part of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s collection. The painting features a series of narrow blue rectangles at the top of the canvas, which suggest the sky. Uneven rectangles and trapezoids create paths leading one’s eye from the bottom of the page to the elevated horizon. Broad trapezoids painted pale hues are arranged down the center of the canvas to suggest a main road. The painting is a fine example of Klee’s interest in the relationship between music and visual art, as he was a composer and music theorist in addition to being a painter.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Paul Klee (1879-1940) was a Swiss-born German artist. He was one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Klee’s highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He was also a composer and music theorist. Klee’s works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes childlike perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality. He taught at the Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture in Germany. Klee’s works include more than 10,000 paintings, drawings, and etchings.
